LSC FOR LOW-COST CARBURIZATION OF STEEL

LSC Lignite Special Coke by Rheinbraun Brennstoff (RBB) is a versatile carbon carrier for the steel industry designed to meet demanding metallurgical requirements. It can often replace more expensive carburization products, such as graphite or needle coke, in addition to underlying processes including pre-deoxidation, increasing scrap rates and basic carburization.

LSC is made by coking Rhenish lignite. It will be readily available for many years to come, meaning our customers can benefit from a highly secure supply. Process costs can be calculated years in advance, thanks to long-term supply agreements. RBB covers the entire production chain, guaranteeing high availability as the company owns its production facilities and runs its own well-oiled logistics operation.

DISSOLVES AND REACTS FAST

LSC dissolves perfectly in the melt as it is highly porous. It is also highly reactive, and accelerates the alloying and carburizing process.

SULPHUR CAPTURE

90 per cent of the sulphur is captured within the coking ash, so only around 10 per cent of the total sulphur content has any effect on the molten steel.

HOMOGENEOUS MELTING

LSC ash contains a high proportion of lime, at around 40 per cent. This gives it alkaline properties similar to typical steelworks slag. This means LSC melts homogeneously into the process slag, leading to a steel melt with no inclusions. That means LSC is also ideal for carburizing steel products which are highly reactive to alumina, spinel or titanium dioxide, such as rail steel, steel cord or bearing steel.

A BRIEF TREATMENT WITH RELIABLE CARBON CONTENT ADJUSTMENT

LSC’s above-average dissolution performance shortens the handling time required. LSC also guarantees reliable carbon content adjustment in molten steel, including when very high amounts of additives are used. This avoids the need for re-alloying or later re-carburization.

PROFITABILITY

LSC is a carbon carrier available on our doorstep that can be extracted and manufactured irrespective of volatile commodity prices on the world market. Long-term supply agreements mean costs for metallurgical processes can be calculated in advance, helping steelworks to become more profitable.

SECURITY OF SUPPLY

LSC offers a highly-secure supply as a carburizing agent made from Rhenish lignite and available for the long-term. RBB guarantees flexible and on-time delivery with its own production sites, two packing and handling terminals and a well-oiled logistics operation. LSC is available in a range of packages and delivery sizes. It can be ordered in packs ranging from 8-kg sacks to 1.2-tonne ‘big bags’, or you can opt for a traditional delivery in bulk quantities by lorry or rail.
